NEW DOCUMENTARY SEES FORMER WOMEN PRISONERS RETURN TO HOLLOWAY
‘Holloway’ sees six former prisoners return to the cells where they were once held, to explore how they each ended up imprisoned there as young women. The women discuss their childhoods, including themes of abuse, family breakdown, domestic violence and criminal exploitation – as well as their experiences of the prison.
Mandy Ogunmokun, who features in the documentary and was the daughter of an addict, first went to Holloway at aged 20.
‘I’m angry that some kids are born into certain circumstances – what chance do they have? Every time I reoffended the judge would say: ‘You haven’t learned anything. Prison officers see horrific things, but they’re not trained counsellors – they’re not mental health trained, they’re not sex-trafficking trained, they’re not domestic violence trained. They’ve got a regime they have to run by.’
Now 66, she has dedicated the past 25 years to helping former addicts break the cycle of addiction and offending.
